Celebrate biking Carrboro-style! The31st Annual Hillsborough Hogg Day (formerly Hog Day) is Friday, May 17th from 6 pm – 10 pm and Saturday, May 18th from 9 am – 6 pm. The event incorporates Hillsborough’s great history and is named after James Hogg, a merchant originally from Scotland who became a leader in patriot activity. The family event downtown at the River Park at 140 E. Margaret Lane features barbecue provided by Hog Heaven (BBQ available on Saturday only), musical entertainment, bounce houses, colonial games, vintage and classic car show, arts and crafts, food vendors and food trucks, beer garden, merchandise vendors and more. Admission is Free.

Learn how to canoe and enjoy the great outdoors! Come have fun, learn canoeing, play games, meet friends and learn to canoe with your kids during our Family Fun Instruction and Trip. Canoeing is a wonderful family activity! This class will teach your family the basics you need to safely enjoy canoeing, opening a whole world of fun and adventure. We will cover the basic strokes and techniques, then head out to explore. Spend some time with the little ones while learning a new family sport. This program is designed to allow families to go at their own pace with the help and guidance of certified instructors with proper equipment. Ages: 8 – 12 years old. Looking for something fun & free to do with your little ones, ages 2-5 years old? Teachers Stefanie Boone and Melissa Stewart have teamed up to create the Traveling Teacher Show Goes Green. With hilarious skits, audience participation and a green muppet named Org Anic, they instruct kids about environmentally sustainable practices. At the end of each show, children create a piece of art using recycled materials.

Exhibit: March 1 – May 31, 2013

Downtown Chapel Hill is getting even more artsy! Downtown Chapel Hill storefronts come to life with site-specific installations by local artists! A collaborative year-long project between the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and Town of Chapel Hill Public and Cultural Arts Office brings eye-catching pop-up art displays to downtown storefronts, promotes artists in our community and further establish downtown Chapel Hill as a dynamic space for art. Additionally, an art wrapped Transit bus by Chapel Hill artist Mary Carter Taub entitled Mobile Mural will be traveling downtown routes for a year beginning in March as part of the Town’s Downtown Art Program in partnership with the Orange County Arts Commission. The Opening Reception is Friday, March 8 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe during the 2nd Friday ArtWalk. It is free and open to the public. Meet the artists, enjoy food & drinks, and hear about this great collaborative arts initiative. From 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, the Mobile Mural art bus will be parked along Franklin Street in front of The Courtyard.

Participate in the pie contest or the Art Walk at galleries hosting opening night receptions. April 26th concert is The Brand New Life, an eight-piece band recognized as one of the Southeast’s top Afrobeat groups.

Each episode typically includes segments featuring the latest collections from local designers and boutiques, interviews with artists and businesses, shopping and style advice, news and coverage of fashion shows and related events. Produced through the facilities of The Peoples Channel (TPC) and Durham Community Media (DCM) series producers hope the show will increase awareness of the area’s hidden and emerging fashion talent thereby improving the economic sustainability of local independent designers and retail businesses. Starting 11/10/12 Triangle Fashion Rundown airs Saturdays @12:00 pm on Channel 18 in Durham (DCM), Channel 8 in Chapel Hill and Orange County and Channel 4 in Carrboro (TPC). Skywatching with Our Local Experts! Our monthly skywatching sessions are free and open to the public! Check the “News” listing on our home page or call Guest Relations at 919-962-1236 on the day of the skywatching session to be sure weather conditions will permit us to host this outdoor activity. Skywatching sessions are usually on Saturday nights at Jordan Lake State Park (Ebenezer Church Recreation Area), and directions to this site are posted on this page. Occasionally, Morehead hosts skywatching sessions at other locations, including Little River Regional Park. These skywatching sessions are listed below in a separate chart. Curious about what to expect during a skywatching session? Check out these Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about skywatching with Morehead.

Under a starry night sky, enjoy:

  • telescopic views of beautiful objects, including planets, nebulae, star clusters and, of course, the Moon,
  • an informal tour of the constellations with a Morehead educator,
  • constellation myths and legends, and
  • experienced observers available to answer your questions about astronomy.
