CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Classic employees and friends of Classic donated $1,585 to provide three harness systems for the CMPD Special Operations K9 Unit. It all started when a colleague came to Leanne Kinsella mentioning she had seen a national organization on the news who needed bullet proof vests. Kinsella, Director of Market Development for Classic, decided rather than raise funds for a national organization based out west, to reach out to local police units, specifically those with K9 Units to see if there was a need.

Officer Matt Yoder of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded mentioning that while they had a generous donation last year from a local corporation and were “all set” on bullet proof vests for the special operations unit, two of the dogs were in need of harness systems that the canines wear when going into dangerous situations.

Yoder said “Interested?” to which Kinsella responded “I’m on it!” And getting buy in from her pet sitter, Paulette DeRonda, Owner of Lake Norman Pet Sitting, set out to raise donations with a goal of having the funds in by April 30th. Mid-way through April, she and DeRonda contacted Yoder to share the exciting news that the donations had flooded in and they had exceeded their original goal.

David Pitts, President and Founder of Classic and a dog lover also, was behind Kinsella’s cause from the get go. “I’m very happy that the people of Classic could come together to help law enforcement keep these incredible animals safe in the performance of their duties. Our people are always up for a challenge,” commented Pitts.

“Our budget does not allow us to go out and buy these harnesses at $600 a piece,” added Officer Matt Yoder. “So when local companies reach out to support us it makes a big impact. These harness systems are specifically designed to allow our dog teams to perform all tasks to support every unit within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. We are grateful to our supporters,” said Yoder.

The harnesses were designed by North Carolina based Remington Arms K-9. Matt Yoder and his team brought the dogs out to Classic Headquarters in Innovation Park on May 28th. To see a video of the demonstration performed at the event visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enK_sp2-Fsw
