Tomato Day!

| June 26, 2014

Tomato Day, the Carrboro Farmers’ Market’s biggest and most anticipated annual event, kicks off on Saturday, July 12, 2014!

Starting at 8:30am, the Market’s volunteer team will serve up freshly sliced tomato samples selected from over 70 different tomato varieties available at Market. Shoppers can experience the taste of local favorites like Sungolds, Romas, and Big Beefs, alongside truly unique varieties like Nebraska Wedding, Green Zebra, Black Krim, Lemon Boy, and San Marzano. The fresh slices will be paired alongside local breads, fresh cheeses, and a special edition tomato-infused beer from Steel String Brewery. Additional Tomato Day festivities include live music, face painting for kids, delicious tomato recipes to try at home, and much more!

Since one day is not enough to honor the beloved tomato, there will be additional celebrations during the week leading up to Tomato Day. On July 9 at the Wednesday Market, Chef Marshall Smith of Glasshalfull will provide samples of a tomato themed dish, and shoppers can pick up information on making salsa and gazpacho!

The whole town is joining in the celebration with a Chapel Hill/Carrboro-wide raffle. From July 7-11, shoppers can stop in at over 30 participating local businesses and pick up free raffle tickets for chances to win over 45 fabulous prizes. Raffle tickets are turned in at Market during Tomato Day, and shoppers get extra tickets for every purchase at Market that day!
